DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMICS EDUCATION
Economics is one of the electives subjects taught in senior secondary schools. Over the years, it has grown to become a well rooted subject, though elective but somehow a core subject which many students registering for Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSCE) or GCE ‘O’ level use to complete their total subjects needed for the registration. It is also one of the courses offered in most Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria.
Brief history of the department.
Department of Economics, Ebonyi State College of Education, Ikwo, was established along with other courses in March, 2001 when the college was established. With the success of the resource inspection of the college conducted in 2003, this course was formally floated among other courses. The department has passed through first, second, third and fourth accreditation exercise and in all of them obtained full accreditation.
Philosophy
The philosophy which guide the selection and training of students in economics is the desire to continuously produce NCE graduates well equipped to educate students at lower level and also plays positive roles towards the social and economic advancement of the nation. The subject, economics, equips individuals with the knowledge to teach, analyze, explain and where appropriate offer solution to individuals and societal issues. In depth knowledge of economics therefore liberates the minds of the recipients from bondage of superstitious belief and ignorance and places them in a position to confront their problems and that of the society with optimism. In addition, the subject helps in the development of critical thinking, which are required for making logical contribution towards economic growth and development.
Objectives
The programme is design to achieve the following objectives:
- Produce competent NCE economics teachers for secondary schools who possess adequate academic and professional skills.
- Prepare teachers who will instil in students the ability to make critical analysis and take wise decisions on basic problems of this society.
- Produce teachers who are capable and eager to further their education in economics or other related areas of study
- Prepare teachers who will be able to acquire fundamental economic skills and abilities and be able to use them in their daily lives.
- Produce teachers who are capable and eager to further their education on economics or other related area of study.
Admission Requirements
- General
- A Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSCE) or GCE ‘O’ level with passes in 5 subjects which must be at credit level in the same sitting or at two sittings. Two of the credits must be relevant to the course the candidates wishes to offer. Credit in English and Mathematics are required.
- Grade II Teachers’ Certificate with credit or merit in five subjects, two of which must be relevant to the course the candidate wishes to offer Credit in English and Mathematics are required.
- Successful candidates in the Pre/NCE final examination who also take and succeed in a selection examination organized by an accredited body would be qualified for the admission.
- All candidates wishing to be considered for admission must enroll for and write the selection examination organized by any accredited body such as JAMB.
- If eventually the college decides to administer their own elimination tests and interviews, any candidate wishing to be admitted and must have met the college requirement for the test must partake.
- Associateship Certificates in Education awarded by an approved institution in Nigeria or abroad is also acceptable.
- Teachers’ Grade II certificate with at least (5) years of post-teaching qualification experience with or without the number of credits or merits indicated in (a) and (b) above may be considered.
II) Specifics:
- In addition to the general admission requirements for NCE programmes, candidates with SSCE or GCE wishing to study Economics must have a credit pass in any two of the following subjects:
- Economics
- History
- Geography
- Government
- Christian Religious Studies
- Islamic Religious studies
- Commerce
- Candidates with TC II must have credit/merit pass in Economics.
Scope of the programme
The progremme is a three years programme which covers such areas in economics which are of national and international interest. They include Economic Theory, Economic Development and Planning, International Economics, Money and Banking, Economics Methodology, Labour Economics and Industrial Relations, Quantitative Economics, Applied Economics, Public Sector Economics and Research Methods in Economics.
Mode of study
The progremme is designed to take place on full time basis
Duration of study
NCE progremme lasts for three (3) years while the pre NCE programme is expected to last for one (1) year.
