HISTORY OF EBONYI STATE COLLEGE OF EDUCATION, IKWO

The College was formally established by the Ebonyi State of Nigeria Law No. 3 of 6th March, 2001 as an institution for the training of teachers as well as for research and training of students of education. Prior to its conversion to a College of Education, it was formerly a College of Agriculture with its origin in the Norwegian Church Agricultural Project (NORCAP) founded as a Missionary rural development project in Ikwo in 1962.

The project, with all its assets, was voluntarily handed over to the then Anambra State Government of Nigeria in 1980, who subsequently converted it into an Agricultural Training School in 1982. It later metamorphosed into the present Ebonyi State College of Education, Ikwo in the 1999/2000 academic session. The College is however developing a master plan to fit into the inherited 40-hectdare expanse of land.

At the moment, the College has adequate academic and non-academic staff, and the student population dwindles just like many other Colleges of Education in Nigeria. The academic structure is in 5 schools with 20 departments and over 50 course combinations. At the moment, the College is entering its 16th year of academic operations.

Between November 26th and 29th 2003, the College undertook the usual Resource Visitation primarily aimed at accessing the recourse level of the College of Education. The College was found qualified and approved as one of the Colleges of Education in Nigeria in October 2004. This removed the status as an illegal private institution before the NCCE.

The College later in June 2005 applied and presented our 5 schools and 20 departments for accreditation. During the Nov., 14-16 2005 accreditation exercise, the College also scaled through another NCCE accreditation exercise and all departments in the College got full accreditation.

 

Vision of the College

The vision of Ebonyi State College of Education, Ikwo is to become a reputable teacher training institution that will produce self-reliant teachers with relevant intellectual and professional competencies to meet the teaching manpower needs of contemporary Nigerian Early Child care and Education, and Basic Education Schools

 

Mission of the College

The mission of the College include:

  1. To produce qualified and well-trained Teachers who can adequately fit into the country's educational system as teachers for Early Childhood care and Education, Basic Education, and Senior Secondary School, and be able to identify gaps in existing educational practices and introduce the required changes.
  2. To assist teachers in acquiring basic knowledge, attitudinal traits, and information management skills needed for meeting the learning needs of the students’ generation: and 
  3. To lay a solid foundation for self-pride and contentment by professional teachers

 

Objectives of the College

The academic objectives of the College are as follows

  1. To provide qualified candidates access to qualitative teacher education as empowered by law.
  2. To organize, develop, and improve academic courses for the training of various categories of teachers
  3. To promote research and the advancement of teaching and learning:
  4. To serve as a center for educational research especially as applied to local conditions
  5. To organize, improve, and extend education to a standard higher than the secondary school level; and
  6. To encourage all classes and communities to pursue regular and liberal courses of education without any form of distinction.
