DEPARTMENT OF BIOLOGY EDUCATION

The department offers programs which will lead to award of National Certificate in Education (NCE). The department was established in the year 2000 when the college came into existence. Since then the department has been growing alongside other departments in the school of science. The academic programs of the department was formally accredited in 2005 by the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) Abuja.

 

PHILOSOPHY

The NCE biology program is intended to produce knowledgeable, highly motivated professionals and effective teachers of biology who will be able to develop in the students an appreciation and understanding of biological processes and principles. The program is also expected to develop confidence in biology teachers, thereby enhancing their ability to adapt to the dynamic situations in a science and technologically driven society.

 

OBJECTIVES

At the end of the NCE biology program, the students will be able to:

  1. View biology as a process of inquiry into the living world.
  2. Critically analyze the activities of living things in their environment.
  3. Demonstrate practical skills in the handling of scientific apparatus.
  4. Demonstrate excellence and professional competence teaching secondary school biology.
  5. Apply concepts and methods acquired in the course in new areas of study and in everyday life situations.
  6. Make a successful career in biology teaching.
  7. Successfully undertake a B.Ed. or B.Sc. (ED) degree program.

 

DURATION OF  PROGRAMME

The academic program leading to the award of National Certificate in Education (NCE) biology is designed to last for a minimum of three (3) years and maximum of five (5) years.

 

GENERAL ADMISSION REQUIRMENTS

  1. A senior secondary school certificate (SSCE) or (NECO) or (WAEC) or GCE O’ level with a minimum of five (5) credts including English and Mathematics, Biology and any other two relevant science subjects which must be either of these subjects which are: Chemistry, Physics, Geography, Agricultural Science and Health Education.
  2. A Grade 11 Teachers certificate (TC11)

With credit or merit in three subjects, two of which must be relevant to the course the student is offering.

  1. Associate certificate in education awarded by an approved institution in Nigeria or abroad is also an acceptable qualification.
  2. Successful candidates in the pre-NCE final examination or credit pass in JAMB examination organized by an accredited body would be qualified for admission.
  3. All candidates wishing to be considered for admission must enroll for and write the selection examination organized by an accredited body such as JAMB.

 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT

Pre-NCE candidates should have a minimum of D grade before transiting to Biology at NCE proper.
